Pure Treats, the Montreal-based pet food business, has announced the acquisition of Primal Pet Foods from private equity firm Kinderhook Industries. The transaction, which includes manufacturing sites in Texas and Colorado, was supported by Fredericks Michael & Co., who acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Pure Treats.
Pure Treats, the owner of the PureBites and PureSnacks brands, described the deal as a “transformational moment” for the company. Based in Fairfield (CA), Primal Pet Foods specialises in branded frozen and freeze-dried pet foods and currently supplies markets in North America and across Asia, including Malaysia and South Korea. Pure Treats already operates its own factory in Texas alongside a co-packing facility in Canada.
Marc Cathcart, co-founder and president of Pure Treats, stated: “Primal was one of the first brands in the raw- and freeze-dried categories and we are thrilled to be able to have them join the PureBites family”. Primal Pet Foods was founded in 2001 by Matt Koss, who noted that the return to private ownership would offer the brand new opportunities to continue its mission.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
