Marzetti (formerly Lancaster Colony) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Bachan’s, the fast-growing maker of Japanese barbecue sauce, for $400 million in cash.
The transaction serves as a major expansion of Marzetti’s “better-for-you” condiment portfolio, bringing in a high-growth brand that generated approximately $87 million in net sales for the 12 months ended December 31st 2025. Founded in 2019, in Sebastopol (CA), Bachan’s is known for its cold-filled, clean-label sauces based on a multi-generational family recipe.
Marzetti CEO David A Ciesinski commented: “This transaction will reinforce Marzetti’s position as a global leader in sauces by adding a premium brand that is exceptionally well aligned with evolving consumer preferences for global flavors […] Over time, we intend to further broaden distribution, support continued product innovation, and thoughtfully extend the brand into new channels and adjacent categories”.
Justin Gill, founder and CEO of Bachan’s, added: “My team and I have been working incredibly hard to deliver on this vision of building the first iconic Japanese-American flavor brand […] I am honored to partner with The Marzetti Company for the next stage of making my vision for Bachan’s a reality”.
The deal is expected to close by June 30 the subject to regulatory approvals. It follows the corporate rebranding of Lancaster Colony to The Marzetti Company (trading as Nasdaq: MZTI) in 2025.
