What are your expectations for this edition of Anuga?

Anuga 2025 will once again be the world’s most important platform for the food and beverage industry. From 4 to 8 October 2025, Cologne will be the global centre of the food and beverage world. With its ten trade fairs, Anuga offers a unique overview of products, markets and ground-breaking developments as an international trade and marketplace.

Under the guiding theme of ‘Sustainable Growth’, we are setting an example for a sustainable food industry. The premiere of Anuga Alternatives as a new trade fair for products from alternative protein sources offers visionary companies an exclusive platform for innovative solutions. Another highlight is the global Halal Conference, which brings together experts and industry leaders to discuss growth potential and innovations.

What is driving increased consumer interest in alternative proteins, and how is the interest being reflected at this year’s Anuga?

The growing consumer interest in alternative proteins is driven by several factors: health awareness, sustainability and innovations in the product range. In Europe, the market for meat substitutes is forecast to grow steadily, with Germany as the leading centre of innovation. Particularly exciting is the increasing variety beyond classic burgers and minced meat alternatives: from plant-based to cell-cultivated to insect and algae-based solutions.

The dairy alternatives sector is also growing dynamically: global dairy alternatives with a natural claim are recording a compound annual growth rate (CAGR 2020-2024) of +10%, which confirms the trend towards clean-label products. In addition, plant-based protein sources such as lentil protein (+45%) and field bean protein (+36%) are gaining in importance, creating new innovation opportunities for dairy alternatives.

Anuga is responding to this change with a pioneering innovation: Anuga Alternatives. As the world’s leading trade fair for food and beverages, we are giving this future market its own stage for the first time. Anuga Alternatives is the exclusive platform for manufacturers, retailers and innovators who are developing the next generation of sustainable products from alternative protein sources – from plant and mushroom-based proteins to cell-cultivated meat and innovative alternatives based on insects and algae.

What other key trends do you expect to shape the food and drinks industry in 2025 and beyond?

Together with our knowledge partner, we recognise five key trends that will influence the food industry in 2025 and beyond:

  1. Personalised nutrition: consumers are increasingly demanding food that is individually tailored to their health needs. Transparency and proven health benefits are key.
  2. Natural & pure foods: the trend towards ‘clean labels’ is growing, with a focus on simple, transparent ingredients and plant-based alternatives such as fava beans.
  3. Sustainability: environmentally friendly production, resource-saving ingredients and sustainable packaging are becoming increasingly important, supported by innovations such as algae or cultured proteins.
  4. Gut health: demand for pro- and prebiotics and high-fibre products is increasing as consumers pay more attention to their microbiome.
  5. Convenient & healthy snacks: convenient, quick but healthy snack options are gaining traction to support busy lifestyles.
