Johnsonville, a family-run US sausage business, has announced plans to close its processing plant in Momence (IL) with the loss of 274 jobs.
Founded in 1945, Johnsonville offers more than 80 types of sausage, sold in over 40 countries and featured at more than 75 sporting venues. The Momence site opened in 1962 and has been producing meat products for the brand since 1995.
“We made the difficult decision after evaluating how best to optimize our operations network to address current and future growth”, the company said in a statement.
Johnsonville stated that operations from the Momence plant will be transferred to three others, two in Wisconsin and one in Kansas. It also said it expected to create 100 new jobs by the end of Q3, split between its Sheboygan Falls and Watertown sites.
