German retail chain Lidl has announced it is investing €122 million ($136 million) in a new logistic facility in Herentals, Belgium.
At 43,000 sq m, the distribution centre is described as Lidl’s largest in Belgium to date, and from 2027 will supply supermarkets in the Antwerp area.
In line with sustainability objectives, offices at the facility will be warmed using waste industrial heat, while solar panels will also be fitted to the roof.
“Belgium remains a significant growth market for Lidl”, commented Marjolein Frederickx CEO of Lidl BeLux. “This distribution centre is essential for ensuring our current and future stores are supplied with fresh products daily”.
Presently, Lidl has 302 stores in Belgium but plans to open a further 80 more by 2038. The new distribution centre will be Lidl’s fifth in the country.
