Bega, the Australian dairy firm, has announced plans to consolidate its Strathmerton cheese processing and packaging operations into its existing site at its Ridge Street facility in Bega.
As a result of the changes, Bega expects A$30 million ($19.4 million) in annual savings from consolidation. It will also invest A$50 million ($32.4 million) in the Ridge Street facility to modernise cheese production and enhance capabilities.
Commenting on the move, Bega Group CEO Pete Findlay said: “As the business maintains its focus on delivering productivity improvement and growth, we continue to look at opportunities to simplify our operational footprint and invest for the future ensuring we maintain globally competitive infrastructure”.
The closure will take place in phases, with the Strathmerton site operating until mid-2026, allowing many affected employees to remain in employment until the plant closes its doors.
