Mondelez International, the US confectionery and snacks firm, has revealed it has taken a minority stake in Uplift Food, a start-up focusing on prebiotic functional foods, for an undisclosed sum.
The investment is the first Mondelez International has made via its SnackFutures venture hub, announced last November, which aims at unlocking snack growth opportunities around the world.
Uplift Food’s Daily Uplifter is a vanilla-flavoured dietary supplement described as containing “gut-nourishing” prebiotics to improve gut health and, by extension, mood.
Commenting on the acquisition, Tim Cofer, executive vice president and chief growth officer at Mondelz International said: “As the global snacking leader, we’re on a clear mission to lead the future of snacking by providing the right snack, for the right moment, made the right way. Together with Uplift Food, we have a unique opportunity to disrupt the functional food category by delivering ‘snackable’ products focusing on gut health – something that does not exist today”.
