USA: Impossible Foods partners with Equii to boost protein content

Impossible Foods, the California-headquartered plant-based meat producer, has entered into a licensing agreement with bread and pasta specialist Equii to bolster its presence in the high-protein food sector.

The partnership will allow Impossible Foods to pair its meat alternatives with Equii’s portfolio of protein-enriched products, which includes bread, pasta and baking mixes. The collaboration aims to provide consumers with more nutrient-dense meal options, such as plant-based burgers where both the patty and the bun provide a significant source of protein. According to the company, the deal will enable it to differentiate its offerings in a challenging market for meat alternatives by targeting the growing consumer demand for functional nutrition.

Peter McGuinness, CEO of Impossible Foods, commented: “This is a big step forward for us and the rest of the category as consumers are looking for ways to pack in the protein. We’re excited to lead the charge”. He added that the agreement would allow the company “to deliver even more protein in a way that’s complementary to our existing plant-based proteins”.”

Based in San Francisco, Equii specialises in using fermentation technology to create grain-based products with elevated protein levels and fewer carbohydrates.

No financial details regarding the licensing deal were disclosed.
