Del Monte Foods, a subsidiary of consumer goods major Del Monte Pacific, has announced plans to close a green bean manufacturing plant in Markesan, WI and a tinned sweetcorn and peas plant in Toppenish, WA, according to reports in Just Food and Food Business News.
The closures are said to be expected by the end of the company’s fiscal year in April, with around 220 jobs reportedly affected.
Commenting on the move, Del Monte Foods director of corporate communications Drew McGowan said: “This was an extremely difficult decision, but one that Del Monte Foods needed to make to align and streamline operational capacity with consumer demand”.
“There has been a general reset in consumer behavior, realigning with buying habits at pre-COVID levels and has required the company to assess its manufacturing network and reduce the number of facilities”, he added.
