UK poultry producer Bernard Matthews has announced plans to close a factory in Great Witchingham, Norfolk that makes cooked meats, with up to 600 jobs potentially affected, according to reports in Food Manufacture and Eastern Daily Press
The company has reportedly already ceased production at the plant, having concluded it is no longer commercially viable due to rising costs, despite investment in recent years. It also cited lower consumer demand for turkey, its primary product.
“Following a review of our operations in East Anglia, we are proposing to make changes to help us overcome the huge challenges facing our sector”, a spokesperson is quoted as saying. “Our key priority now is to hold consultations with all employees and their representatives and explore the full range of options before making any final decisions”.
