Dr. Oetker, the leading food multinational, has acquired a majority stake in Magioni, a start-up firm specializing in plant-based pizzas, according to a report in Levensmiddelenkrant.
The Magioni product range includes brightly-coloured pizza bases made from cauliflower, beetroot, courgette and pumpkin, which are said to be produced and stretched by hand. As well as prepared pizza bases, Magioni makes ready-prepared pizzas in vegetarian varieties such as Margherita and Funghi, and hand held “pizza snacks” that are designed for on the go.
Magioni has listings in leading Dutch retail chains such as Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Plus, with some products also available in the UK via Waitrose.
Commenting on the deal, Magioni founder Manon van Essen said: “Going from start-up to scale-up is not without its challenges, and we were looking for a way to professionalise in order to realize our international ambitions. […] The financing will mainly be used for further internationalization and the shaping of new innovations, for which we can lean on the knowledge and expertise of Dr. Oetker”.
