Consumer goods manufacturer Britannia has announced plans to close a factory in Taratala, Kolkata that manufactures biscuits, according to Times Now and Just Food report.
Founded in 1947, the Taratala factory is described as Britannia’s second-oldest manufacturing site in India. It occupies 11 acres of leasehold land and supports a workforce of approximately 150.
This decision follows the closure of other Britannia manufacturing plants in Chennai and Mumbai.
In a statement, Britannia said: “A voluntary retirement scheme offered by the company to the workers at its factory situated at Taratala, Kolkata, West Bengal, has been accepted by all the permanent workers of the aforementioned factory of the company”.
Britannia is reportedly focused on closing down older, less efficient factories located near city centres and constructing modern facilities with higher production capacity.
