Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg company in the USA, has announced the acquisition of certain assets of the Van’s Foods business from Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, a US manufacturer of frozen bakery and dessert products.
The acquisition is aimed at supporting Cal-Maine Foods’ strategy to diversify its business model and grow in the prepared foods business-to-consumer (B2C) retail space. Van’s operates within the frozen breakfast segment, holding a top position in gluten-free waffles. According to Cal-Maine Foods, the addition of Van’s Foods is expected to increase its prepared foods annual sales by approximately 10% and volume by about 6% on a pro forma basis. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cal-Maine Foods’ president and chief executive officer Sherman Miller commented: “Van’s is an exciting and highly complementary addition to our portfolio. We believe this acquisition will further our diversification strategy by expanding our reach in prepared foods consumer-facing retail. We see meaningful opportunities to drive growth, unlock efficiencies, and innovate in ways that better serve our customers and consumers”.
